History of RoofHero

I started this website after finishing up graduate school at Georgia Tech, where I studied computer science with a focus on AI. While working through undergrad and grad school, I ran a roofing company in Northern Virginia called Schaefer Burdett Exteriors. We served hundreds of customers and maintained very high reviews. Once I finished school, I closed up shop and got into software.

I have lots of experience in programming, particularly in the domain of machine learning. I've worked at a fortune 100 company serving millions of consumers with advanced algorithms, as well as some other niche companies in finance. I've applied all of this knowledge to make RoofHero unique, special, and useful to you. Without getting too fancy, machine learning is basically what enables us to take your address (and that's it) and produce an accurate surface area. I knew I always wanted to build something like RoofHero after personally experienced all sorts of inefficiencies in the roofing industry.

The biggest inefficiency is mismatched pricing with consumer expectations. There's all sorts of roofing companies out there, big and small. The bigger companies tend to have higher prices due to higher overhead, but also have a stronger probability of remaining in business to service warranties. Smaller companies have much more variance in customer service. Some are great, others aren't. Typically smaller companies have cheaper prices since they have less staff.

What I found after running thousands of roofing sales appointments and roof inspections is that most homeowners simply have no idea how much a roof will cost. RoofHero answers this core problem, providing an instant price to homeowners for free. We are very transparent about our monetization as well. We make deals with contractors to provide them exclusive leads (your info). In exchange for routing your information to them, we get a percent of the sale. This model is pretty standard at this point in the industry, with the exception of one thing. RoofHero actually gives a real price for your roof, specific to your assigned contractor.

After interviewing lots of homeowners, most agree that the Angi's List model of entering your info for a broad topic, only to be bombarded by calls, texts, and emails is very annoying. It's just inefficient and software has the ability to be smarter now. RoofHero always finds the one single best contractor for your home, and never re-sells information. It is a 1:1 match, which makes it better for the homeowner and the contractor.

There's a few competitors to RoofHero out there. Most of these competitors use Google's solar API to get the surface area of a roof, which isn't always right (because it's designed for solar). They also just give a massive range on pricing, because they don't actually take their semi-accurate surface area and then apply it to your assigned contractor. They don't do any vetting, and they sell your information to an untold number of contractors.

RoofHero uses a proprietary machine learning model with advanced image analysis and geospatial queries that no one else has. It is faster and more accurate than any competitors we have analyzed. The routing logic can have many contractors in one zip code, but still find the single best contractor for you. The combination of intelligent routing and accurate, instant surface area is what we refer to behind the scenes as the "RoofHero Engine". If Google decides they don't want to host their solar API anymore, RoofHero will just keep humming. For the nerds out there, we own our data, weights and biases on our machine learning model. No one else uses our model.
